Dressage Tests by Country: All Levels and Official Test Sheets

This page lists the dressage tests currently in use at twelve federations, level by level, with a link to each official test sheet. It is the reference behind the level comparator: every level carries the rung it occupies on the shared 12-rung difficulty ladder, the movements its tests contain, the arena size, who may enter, and what the federation itself says about the FEI equivalent.

Open a level to see its detail. Test names and movement lists are kept in the federation’s own language where the test sheets use it. Levels marked “not on the ladder” are children’s or young-horse tracks that are listed for completeness but cannot be compared. An amber badge means at least one item could not be read from an official source, and should be treated as a pointer rather than a fact.

Data edition: 4 Oct 2026. Senior/standard national dressage tests + FEI; pony, para, young-horse and freestyle tests excluded (listed only as notes). Levels/tests with 'unverified': true contain at least one item that could not be read from an official source. Display them with a warning, never as fact.

Edition and verification notes

Verified 2026-09-29 directly from the FEI tests index page and the test-sheet PDFs (text extracted from the official PDFs). The index page is split into 'DRESSAGE TESTS VALID UNTIL 31/12/2026' (the editions listed below: Seniors/U25/YR/Juniors/Pony 'update 2026', Children 'Edition 2020 - update 2022') and 'DRESSAGE TESTS VALID FROM 01/01/2027' (all listed as 'Edition 2027'; no PDFs were linked yet on 2026-09-29). The 2027 line-up restructures the senior levels: CDI1*/CDIO1*: Prix St. Georges, Intermediate I, Inter I Freestyle; CDI2*/CDIO2*: Intermediate II A, Intermediate II B, Intermediate II Freestyle, Grand Prix A; CDI3* and above: Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special, Grand Prix Freestyle (Short Grand Prix CDI-W only); CDIU25: Intermediate II B, Grand Prix 16-25. Intermediate A and Intermediate B do not appear in the 2027 list. Arena size is not printed on the test sheets: FEI Dressage Rules 2026 Art. 411.3 states the arena must be 60 m long and 20 m wide (all FEI tests, including Children, use the 20x60 letters). Bridle rules, athlete ages and minimum horse ages are from the tables in Art. 401.7 (Senior events) and 401.8 (Youth events) of the 2026 Dressage Rules. Spurs are optional at all levels (Rules, dress/saddlery article: 'Spurs are optional'). Freestyles, Short Grand Prix (CDI-W only), young horse, Regional Games and para tests are excluded.

Edition and verification notes

Current KNHS dressuurproeven are the 'uitgave 2022' edition, in force since 1 April 2022 (an update of the 2016 redesign; only part of the tests were changed). Each level has 4 numbered tests: B 18-21, L1 22-25, L2 26-29, M1 30-33, M2 34-37, Z1 38-41, Z2 42-45, ZZ-Licht 46-49, ZZ-Zwaar 50-53 (Z2 ponies: FEI pony tests 90-92). KNHS publishes a non-binding advisory schedule of two tests per level per month; 'er zijn geen verplichte proeven'. Official test PDFs are published on the Mijn KNHS platform at https://www.mijnknhs.nl/uploads/Proeven/<nr>.pdf (also in the KNHS Dressuurproeven app and the printed Dressuurproevenboek 2022). Class structure, arena sizes, test assignment and promotion rules are in the Disciplinereglement Dressuur 2026 (version 2026, art. 104-108, 120, 145): https://www.knhs.nl/media/jmid00ij/disciplinereglement-dressuur-2026.pdf. Winstpunten (art. 106): average final score >=70% = 3 pts, 65-70% = 2 pts, 60-65% = 1 pt. Promotion (art. 107): B t/m ZZ-Zwaar may promote at 10 winstpunten; B t/m M2 must promote at 30; Z1, Z2 and ZZ-Licht promotion never mandatory (max 40 registered); ZZ-Zwaar -> Prix St. Georges mandatory at 30; within the FEI levels one score >=60% allows the next test level. Degradation (art. 108) may be requested after two consecutive scores of 53% or lower.

Eligibility
Children from their 4th birthday up to and including the year they turn 12, on their own or a riding-school pony; KNHS member with a Bixie&Friends Ruiterpaspoort; pony has a passport and is vaccinated. Entry 'op hun eigen niveau'. Aged 4 or 5: pony must be on a lead with a handler aged 18+, and of the dressage tests only BF1 and BF2 may be ridden.
Notes
Not a KNHS promotion class. Eight dressage tests BF1-BF8, each 5 minutes; every exercise is scored 1 point per criterion met (1 houding, 2 hulpen, 3 tempo, 4 oefeningen/figuren). The KNHS page points to Mijn KNHS (login) and the printed Bixie&Friends Proevenboek, but the protocol PDFs are publicly reachable at https://www.mijnknhs.nl/uploads/Proeven/BF1.pdf to BF8.pdf. The sheets print no edition year.
Why this rung
BF1-BF5 are walk-trot only (rung-1 content); BF6-BF8 add a working-canter strike-off, BF8 a 20 m circle in canter on both reins (rung-2 content). Rider-skill tests for children with poles/gate/slalom, scored 1 point per criterion met instead of marks 0-10 → not ranked.

Impuls (art. 145): 'er worden geen prestatiepunten geregistreerd en er bestaat geen verplichting tot promoveren'; riders already classified in the regular classes may take part; no competition dress required, safety helmet and boots mandatory.
Notes
Klasse BB has its own KNHS tests, proef 16 and 17 (uitgave 2022), 30 marks, total 300 points; collective marks include 'Contact en verbinding' and 'Rijvaardigheid en harmonie'. Impuls (art. 145) may be klasse BB, F-proeven or other forms; the organiser sets the level. F-proeven are the KNHS rider-training tests ridden at riding schools/proevendagen; F1-F5 each have versions A and B ('Versie april 2022') and C and D ('Versie april 2025', ~5 min, F1/F2 now start in trot) – https://www.knhs.nl/nieuws/meer-variatie-met-extra-knhs-f1-tm-f5-proeven. F1 and F2 are 'zonder galop' (walk, trot, gebroken lijn, grote volte, halt); F3 and F4 add arbeidsgalop strike-offs on both reins; F5 adds 'enkele passen de draf verruimen', a slangenvolte with 3 loops and canter strike-off from sitting trot. F sheets are public at https://www.mijnknhs.nl/uploads/Proeven/<1-5><A-D>.pdf.
Why this rung
BB has its own two tests (proef 16 and 17): working walk, trot and canter, 20 m circles, simple transitions, halt-salute, no lengthenings → rung 2. Impuls is at organiser-set level (F1-F2 walk-trot, F3-F4 add canter, F5 adds a few lengthened trot steps); not a promotion class.

Official test index · 11 levels

Edition and verification notes

Current edition is the 'Aufgabenheft Reiten 2024 (Nationale Aufgaben)', published Nov 2023 alongside LPO 2024 and WBO 2024, and still current in 2026 with FN correction sheets (März 2024, Sept 2024, Mai 2025, Aug 2025, Juni 2026) and a supplement page 'Abkürzungen im Dressur-Protokoll Klasse E bis Klasse L' (Sept 2026). No 2025/2026 re-edition was found (the online Regelwerk page shows 'Stand 2024'). It replaced the 2018 edition. Key 2024 changes stated by FN: finer-grained progression of tasks within each class ('kleinschrittigere Aufgabenstellungen', ascending numbering leads towards the next class); Klasse E dressage tests ridden WITHOUT auxiliary reins (Hilfszügel now only in WBO Dressur-WB); new Dressurreiterprüfung Kl. S and Dressurpferdeprüfung Kl. S; the hardest A test is ridden on 20x60. Individual tests are prefixed: E/A/L/M/S = Dressurprüfung; RE/RA/RL/RM/RS = Dressurreiterprüfung (rider test); DA/DL/DM/DS = Dressurpferdeprüfung (young-horse test); RP = Reitpferdeprüfung; suffix /1 = single, /2 = ridden in pairs (zu zweit). Tests marked 'Nur für X*' / 'Nur für X**' fix the sub-class.

Full texts read only for WB 241/A (DRW 1) and WB 242/F (DW 6) from FN replacement pages; the WBO itself is a paid book, so arena and exact content of WB 221, 227, 228 and of DRW 2–3, DW 1–5 remain UNVERIFIED.

Edition and verification notes

Current programmes are the '2025' edition (folder 'Nye protokoller 2025' on rideforbund.dk; LD/LC files carry suffix 'V3'). DRF news 16 Jul 2025 ('Opdaterede dressurbedømmelser på vej'): no brand-new tests, but all existing tests were adjusted with a new judging concept from September 2025 — a half 20 m circle in rising trot with stretching was added as the last movement before the centre line in every test from LB1 upward (coefficient 2), and collective marks were changed. DRF news 29 Apr 2026: from 4 May 2026 the indicative riding time of all DRF tests from LB up to Grand Prix is increased by 15 s. Kür programmes for Pony/Junior/YR/Inter/GP sit in a folder 'Kür programmer 2026'; LA kür and LA6 kür files are dated 11-07-2022. FEI equivalent stated by the federation
Grade 4 (MA1) is listed with FEI-PCY (Young Riders Preliminary) and FEI 7-year-old tests; grade 5 (MA2) is listed with PSG, FEI-PSGTY, FEI-ICY (Young Riders Team/Individual) and FEI-YR Kür — so MA1 ≈ Young Rider preliminary, MA2 ≈ PSG level.
Notes
MA1-A: time 6:00, max 530; MA2-A: time 6:30, max 550. Both start with 'Indridning i samlet galop, parade – stilstand – hilsen' (enter in collected canter). MA1 introduces canter half-pirouettes and 4-tempi; MA2 adds 3-tempi and a 5-step rein-back. MA1 and MA2 exist only as A-bane programmes.
Why this rung
MA1: 5x4-tempi + canter half-pirouettes; MA2: adds 5x3-tempi → rung 9 (DRF: MA1 ≈ YR Preliminary, MA2 ≈ PSG).

Eligibility
PSG + PSG Kür = sværhedsgrad 5; INT1 + INT1 Kür = sværhedsgrad 6 (horses). Pony grade 5 = LA6, PRI; pony grade 6 = PRM, PRT, FEI Pony Kür.
FEI equivalent stated by the federation
PSG = FEI Prix St. Georges (grade 5, alongside FEI-PSGTY / FEI-ICY); Intermediare I = FEI Intermediate I (grade 6). DRF's Danish-language protocols are translations of the FEI tests (DRF news June 2020: 'Små rettelser i nogle af de sværeste dressurprogrammer i henhold til FEI').
Notes
DRF PSG 2025 read in full (28 movements, time 6:20, max 550) and compared with the FEI Prix St-Georges sheet (edition 2009, update 2026; 26 movements): DRF movements 1–25 follow the FEI pattern movement for movement (shoulder-in, 8 m voltes, trot and canter half-passes, walk half-pirouettes, canter half-pirouettes of 3–4 strides, 5 four-tempi, 5 three-tempi, extended gaits). DRF then inserts a transition to collected trot at A and the DRF half 20 m circle in rising trot with stretching (movements 26–27) before the final halt, so it is not a literal copy of the FEI test. Inter I tempi verified: 5x3 and 7x2 with zigzag.
Why this rung
PSG (rung 9) and Inter I (rung 10) – DRF translations of the FEI tests.

United States – USEF/USDF (2023 tests)

Official test index · 6 levels

Edition and verification notes

Current edition: 2023 USEF/USDF tests, printed on each sheet as effective 'December 1, 2022 - November 30, 2026'. US Equestrian's dressage tests page states 'New Dressage Tests will go into effect 12/1/2026 and will be posted on the USDF Website in late Fall' (https://www.usef.org/compete/disciplines/dressage/dressage-tests, read 2026-10-04); the new (2027) tests were not yet published on that date. Introductory Level tests are issued as 'USDF' tests; Training–Fourth Level tests are 'USEF' tests (USDF issues and approves tests in cooperation with USEF per USEF rule DR118). Arena size: USEF DR126.2.c.2 'The Standard Arena is 60 meters long and 20 meters wide. The Small Arena is 40 meters long and 20 meters wide'; DR126.2.c.13 requires a Standard Arena for 'First Level Dressage tests and above, FEI Dressage tests; and musical freestyles, except those tests written for a small arena' and for USEF/USDF qualifying and championship classes at all levels; where the size is optional it must be stated in the prize list (DR126.2.c.12). This matches the test sheets ('ARENA SIZE: Standard or Small' on Intro and Training sheets; 'Standard' only on First–Fourth). Official USDF PDF links are direct but often refuse or time out for automated fetchers; movement lists were verified from Equestrian Canada's official mirror of the identical 2023 USEF tests (equestrian.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/...).

Introductory Level Rung 2 3 tests
Rungs covered
Introductory Test A, B (rung 1: Walk–trot only); Introductory Test C (rung 2: Introductory walk–trot–canter)
Arena
20x40 or 20x60 (test sheets: 'Standard or Small'; times e.g. Test A 5:00 standard / 4:00 small; Test C 6:00 / 5:00)
Purpose
To introduce the rider and/or horse to the sport of dressage, confirming that they are beginning to develop an understanding of correct dressage basics. (Test sheet adds: horse ridden freely forward in a steady tempo with a clear rhythm, accepting contact with the bit; test accuracy and geometry demonstrated.)
Movements
  • Halt and salute through medium walk at X (Test A: halt at X on final centerline only; B and C: halt at entry and exit)
  • 20 m circles in working trot rising
  • Change of rein across the diagonal in working trot (Tests A and C)
  • Medium walk
  • Free walk on a long/short diagonal (e.g. H-X-F, F-E, B-H)
  • Test C adds: 20 m circle developing working canter (each lead) in the first quarter of the circle, then back to trot before A
  • All trot work ridden rising (sitting permitted briefly for transitions)
Gaits
medium walk, free walk, working trot (rising), working canter (Test C only)
Eligibility
Open; intended for riders and/or horses new to dressage. USEF DR119: horses may enter no more than two consecutive levels at any one competition. No verified age restriction for this level.
FEI equivalent stated by the federation
None (below FEI). Walk-trot(-canter) introductory tests; no FEI counterpart.
Notes
Max points: Tests A/B 160, Test C 200. Purpose statement quoted verbatim from 2023 Intro A sheet and USDF 'Introducing the 2023 Dressage Tests'. Test A: 9 movements; Test B: 9 movements (20 m circles at E and B, free walk F-E); Test C: 13 movements. USDF also prints an older, longer Introductory purpose in its Teaching Manual appendix (purposeoftests.pdf) — that is a pre-2023 edition.
Why this rung
Tests A/B walk–trot (rung 1); Test C adds working canter 20 m circles (rung 2). Spans 1–2.

Above Fourth Level, US competitions use FEI tests (Prix St. Georges, Intermediate I, Intermediate A/B, Intermediate II, Grand Prix), plus USEF Developing PSG/Developing GP and young-horse tests.
Why this rung
T1: 3 single changes on the diagonal, canter half-pass, walk half-pirouettes (rung 8); T2: working pirouettes + 3x4-tempi; T3: working half-pirouettes + 3x3-tempi (rung 9). Level = rung 9 (lower); USEF: 'medium level of difficulty' ≈ PSG preparation.
